According to historical lore, Cobb County was named for Thomas Willis Cobb, a 19th century U.S. representative and senator from Georgia and the City of Marietta was named for his wife, Mary.
Cobb County is part of the original and core (five-county) Atlanta metropolitan area, which is included in the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Marietta, Georgia metropolitan statistical area.
